Our organically crafted Nutmeg Oil (Myristica fragrans) often ushers warmth and emotional renewal into a space. So many of us have such fond memories surrounding this incredibly warm and comforting spice, especially during the holiday season! Whether baking many different types of tasty treats or adding it to a hot cocoa drink, the aroma is so welcoming and inviting.
Nutmeg – A Warming Essential Oil
Nutmeg essential oil is steam distilled from a tropical evergreen tree that thrives in warm climates such as Indonesia and the West Indies. The spice is produced from the seed, while the bright red covering of the seed (the aril) produces mace. The essential oil is expertly crafted by steam distilling the sun-dried seeds of the nutmeg that have been wildcrafted by local co-ops of community members who come together for the annual harvest. During distillation, the air surrounding the entire production area is filled with an intoxicating, spicy, sweet, nutmeg aroma!
We love using nutmeg essential oil in blends formulated to:
- Support a healthy digestive system
- Help quiet an overactive stomach
- Reduce minor pain and inflammation
- Minimize the presence of unwanted bacteria and fungus
- Help stimulate the circulatory system
- Work to ease unwanted muscle spasms.
Some aromatherapists even use it regularly to help relieve insomnia and usher in a peaceful night’s sleep.
If you have been out in the cold participating in winter activities, this will help warm up those cold hands and feet and help them come back to life! Emotionally and energetically, nutmeg essential oil is invigorating, uplifting, and stimulates the mind especially when one is dealing with situational depression. This essential oil is also welcome when one is feeling particularly emotionally burdened or overwhelmed by a daunting task.
As much as we love the aroma of nutmeg essential oil and appreciate its therapeutic properties, it is important to keep in mind the safety concerns of this oil when incorporating it into your practice of aromatherapy. Nutmeg essential oil is considered a hot oil and should be used sparingly when making blends. We recommend no more than a .8% dilution, which is about 4-5 drops per 1 ounce of carrier oil or butter. If you have sensitive skin, make sure to test your blend on a small area of skin. When using in the diffuser, a little goes a long way, so use sparingly!
